Writers reign

All white on the grey.

My sincere and grateful thanks to Amber Lee Starfire for including my artwork and poem "And They Were Only People"  in Writer's Eye Magazine. It has a fab new look and is a fantastic venue for new and upcoming writers. Please, take a look, submit.

In other news: Think storms, Gothic windows, strange figures with stony glares and bewitched objects. Tis the month of pumpkins and spooky tales, alas it used to be. Here in NZ there is scant evidence of Hallowe'en at all and I miss it. Therefore, I have challenged Andrea at Rainbow Notebook to something of a scary story duel. Each of us is going to write the scariest story or poem (or whatever pops into our heads and out of the keyboard onto blogger) and post it on our blogs with a link to the other's on October 30th. Feel free to join in, add your own offering! Rahahahahahah!

I'm very excited about this - though I'm still just at the "gathering inspiration stage". Looking forward to seeing what you come up with too. I think it's a wonderful idea. I'll post a note on my blog soon too :)

You and me both! GAther, gather, gather....hopefully something will materialise - probably I shall post a pile of utter pants! Scarily bad!

Thanks for doing this though, it's fun!

try purring instead of panting?

Rachel Fenton said...

Purfect suggestion, Cat!

I'm sure it won't be! I've put my note about it up too - so we'll see if we have any other takers as well :)

Yay - cool :)

Congrats and interesting idea. I will give it some thought, see if the grey cells can come up with something.

Rachel Fenton said...

Thank you, Dave. It would be wonderful if you could join in and conjure up a little Hallowe'en spirit for us here in NZ!

Your poem and images make a good match on the magazine page, Rachel. And I really like the idea of the spooky poem. Can I join?

Rachel Fenton said...

Yes, Lori - the more the merrier (or shoulf that be terrified?).WOOOoooooooo!

And thanks for reading the poem. Amber's really lovely to work with, too.

Love the image! And thanks for the link to submit!

Rachel Fenton said...

Thanks, Talli - and you're welcome :)

Hey, when do you have Hallowe'en then?

Rachel Fenton said...

Ha! No fear, Dave - it's the 31st just like yours! Thought posting the night before would give everyone a chance to read it either just before or on the night, when the excitement is still there - doesn't seem any point reading after the event!

You made me laugh!

Sounds fun. The scariest thing for me lately has been looking in the mirror. I guess I could write about that.

Rachel Fenton said...

All sounds a bit Dorian Grey, Kass! I'm dodging the mirror myself lately - got a bad case of teenage skin and I'm rapidly going grey! Think I won't dust the mirror anymore and we can go grey together!

I'm not much of a writer, but I'll be here to read everyone's writings - looking forward to it!

Rachel Fenton said...

Thanks, GW. I wrote a story at the weekend but at 5000words it's a tad too long for the blog! Hopefully I'll have something shorter ready for the 30th...feeling the pessure now!

Congratulations on Writer's Eye. It's a good looking web site. Hey... think scary, and scare on!

Rachel Fenton said...

Thanks, Mike. I've got a few stories but I'm still not happy with any of them for the blog - one's a whopping 5000 words anyway and I have an idea of somewhere to send that but the others are not quite right...may have to post a work in progress if I don't get them sorted in time.

Hi Rachel,

Those melons next door are poisonous, I think - the birds and ground critters won't have anything to do with them, so we follow their lead.

The picture of the Pittsburgh saloon - I figured the lady with her arms akimbo was the owner of said saloon, standing with her numerous customers. That could just be my fertile imagination...

Rachel Fenton said...

I was only thinking about those melons last night! Thanks for that. I now have an urge to research melons!

The saloon picture is apt to stir the most dormant of imaginations into some excitement - but her dress looks so demure! And a big sun hat on at night...thought she'd been out on the razz all day, taken advantage of (Not). There must be a thousand scenarios for the people in that photograph. I love looking at them and just letting the stories tumble out. Thanks.

Hallowe'en is a great subject.

I'm looking forward to the 'celebrations' in Whitby, England this weekend.....home of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Rachel Fenton said...

Ha, Joe, when I think of all the times I've been to Whitby but never made it there for Hallowe'en. I bet it's a sight to marvel at - all the goths and the abbey. Enjoy!

Yeah, I'd love Australia and Nz to have halloween. ( I'm in Aus) but Oct is the wrong time of year here. It needs to be Autum. Easter should be in spring, but I guess we can't change that either.

Hi Tahlia. The weather just doesn't work in our favour, does it? It's hard to feel in the mood for a spooky evening when it's beaming with sunshine and the pumpkin shrivels up before it's dark!

You up for a spooky story?
